Honoring our civil rights past by fighting for Selma’s future
We are a Selma-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving our city’s legacy while building a brighter future.
Our Mission
Our mission is to preserve and memorialize the Civil Rights history of Selma, bring economic and cultural revitalization to the city and its residents, and prepare the next generation of activists to continue the fight against racial injustice.
Selma
A monument to civil rights & the enduring struggle of economic justice
Selma, Alabama is the site of one of the most consequential marches in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as ground zero for the struggle for voting rights and the fight for the socioeconomic prosperity of Black people in the United States.
Historic Tours
Embark on a transformative journey through Selma’s rich history with our meticulously curated historical tours. Our immersive tours highlight first-person accounts, historical artifacts, and compelling exhibits, providing an up-close and personal view into the struggles and triumphs of Selma’s activists.
What We Do
As a community-driven organization, we work hand-in-hand with the community to transform Selma as a rich, cultural hub and trailblazer for social change. Our focus is on historic preservation, civic and youth engagement, economic revitalization, and the self-sufficiency of the community.
Foot Soldiers Park & Education Center
The development of the Foot Soldiers Park & Education Center is central to achieving our vision for the future of Selma. The center will be a dedicated recreational greenspace, a place for historic education and youth development and key service provider for the community, using a holistic care systems approach.
Meet the visionary behind the Park & Education Center
The Park & Education Center has been a longtime dream of Selma native Jo Ann Bland. As a child foot soldier who bravely marched in 1965, Ms. Bland is committed to teaching others about the significance of Selma and inspiring a new generation of activists to lead the way to liberation.
“My dream for Selma is that it will become a place of pilgrimage for all those who seek to right the wrongs of our society, both in our state, our country, and around the world.”
Jo Ann Bland, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer; Child Selma Marcher
