I’ve been around this history my entire life because my grandmother [Ms. Jo Ann Bland] raised me. I basically was born into it. What happened in Selma is so important. It changed the world. I’m proud to be a part of the next generation of foot soldiers working to preserve and share these powerful stories.

Honoring our civil rights past by fighting for Selma’s future
We are on a mission to preserve the Civil Rights history of Selma, create opportunities for the Black community to heal, learn and build wealth, and to embolden youth to claim and use their power for change. As a community-driven organization, we work hand-in-hand with the community to transform Selma as a rich, cultural hub and trailblazer for social change.
There’s just such a need to learn from the foot soldiers. The Civil Rights movement is an inspiring movement for so many different reasons. It has inspired so many around the globe, including other social movements. I really think that what Foot Soldiers Park is doing and its mission can help to transform the community.
