Honor Jo Ann Bland with a gift today
It is with profound sadness and immense gratitude that we celebrate the life and legacy of our founder Jo Ann Bland who passed away on February 19, 2026. Ms. Bland was a lifelong warrior for civil rights and gave everything she had to preserve Selma’s history and pave the way for the next generations of leaders. She was a foot soldier, a bold visionary and a force for change. Now, it is our turn to let her vision guide us and keep her spirit alive.
Your gift will honor her work, sustain her legacy and help us make her vision a reality.

“What people don’t understand or don’t think about [is that] the [Civil Rights] movement was not a Black movement. They couched it like that and wrote our history like that, but women didn’t vote, poor people of any color didn’t vote. The rights that [we have today] fought for by people like me, people right here in Selma. And Selma deserves the best. Selma gave so much to this nation. It’s time for someone to give back. Let it be your time.”
— Jo Ann Bland, Foot Soldiers Park founder and 1965 foot soldier
