YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS WORKSHOP

Join us for a national workshop series that focuses on educating and empowering individuals who are interested in entrepreneurship. This series will explore everything from generating an idea to launching and growing a business. You will learn how to evaluate opportunities, develop effective strategies, create a comprehensive business plan, and acquire financing. The final meeting of this two-part, five-session series will focus on developing or enhancing a business plan for a new or existing project or enterprise.

The Foot Soldiers Park & Education Center (FSP) is hosting this workshop series, advised by their student body, the National Youth Advisory Board (YAB). Our workshops are facilitated by experienced, degreed, and/or licensed professionals and are open to students ages 13-18, professionals, and FSP-identified individuals. We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.

walk with amal in Selma!

Join Foot Soldiers Park Founder Ms. JoAnne Bland, fellow foot soldier and FSP Board Member, Lynda Lowery and Mayopr James Perkins Jr. as they walk with Amal across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Little Amal is the 12 foot puppet of  a 10 year old Syrian refugee child at the heart of The Walk.  She has become a global symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees.

Between 7 September and 26 November 2023, Amal is journeying 11,000 miles across the United States and Mexico in one of the largest free public festivals ever created.  40 towns and cities from Boston to San Diego and 6 cities from Tijuana to Tapachula will create 100+ free public events to welcome her.

Since July 2021, Amal has travelled over 6,000 miles to 97 towns and cities in 15 countries and been welcomed by more than a million people on the street, including hundreds of artists and civil society and faith leaders, as well as by tens of millions online. Her journeys are festivals of art and hope that draw attention to the huge numbers of children fleeing war, violence and persecution, each with their own story. Her urgent message to the world is “Don’t forget about us”.

We are honored to host her in Selma!

2nd Annual Juneteenth celebration

On June 19th, Foot Soldiers Park will celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation from enslavement. On this day, Americans across the country celebrate human freedom, reflect on the inequities that are the legacy of slavery and pledge to end the systemic racism and social injustice that threaten the American promise of liberty and justice for all.

FSP will commemorate Juneteenth with a celebration featuring musical performances by the Afro American Gospel Choir, a Black Business Expo, featuring an exciting lineup of black entrepreneurs showcasing an eclectic range of businesses and a Kidz Zone to bring joy and play to the children of Selma to include inflatables, trackless trains, and face painting.

We’ll also showcase the winners of our inaugural Juneteenth Oratorical Contest, which allows young people aged 12 through 17 to share an original speech on the theme of “Still We Rise”, and our 2023 Miss and Mister Juneteenth Pageant winners and host a day of community service by offering free vendor spaces to community resources and service providers.

Women of Color Initiative Award Ceremony & Workshop

Women of Color Initiative is honoring our founder, Ms. JoAnne Bland, with the Trailblazer Award! for her “relentless commitment to community, civic engagement and freedom”. This will take place during their community archives workshop.

Event registration closes June 7

Complimentary Workshop on Community Archives information

Community archives and other community-centric histories, heritage, and memory projects work to empower communities to tell, protect, and share their history on their terms. Community archive models and community-driven archival practice address the 'symbolic annihilation' [to quote Michelle Caswell] “of historically marginalized groups in the historical record, and aim to create sustainable and accessible memory projects that address these archival absences."

WoCI will offer a complimentary workshop on community archives to Women of Color leaders, including WoCI 2019 thought leaders, organizers, trusted messengers, WoC staff from Table Partner organizations, and other Women of Color in community groups and nonprofits. Upon completing the workshop, these "community creators" can begin an archive project for their racial/ethnic community or organization. Registration for this no-charge workshop will be posted on the website's homepage, coming soon.

Registration closes June 7.
