Selma Primary Election: Know Before You Vote

News Voting Rights

The foot soldiers marched, so we could vote. Today is our turn to get informed and participate in the Selma, Alabama election 2026.

The 2026 Primary Election is on May 19, 2026. This year, we have partnered with Alabama Forward to give Selma and Dallas County residents access to information, resources and easy access to learn what’s on the ballot, who’s running, and what each office does.

We’re proud to release the Selma primary election 2026 Voter Guide – a free, nonpartisan resource covering every race on the ballot for Selma and Dallas County.

Why Selma Needs Its Own Primary Election Guide

Selma’s history is inseparable from the fight for voting rights. The foot soldiers who marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 weren’t just marching for the right to cast a ballot. They were marching for the role Black people can play in shaping our democracy and the power that comes with representation. That power only works when people vote.

But voting can be overwhelming when you don’t know what you’re voting for. Most election coverage focuses on the big races and leaves local offices—the ones that most directly affect our everyday lives—unexplained. Who is the Dallas County Tax Assessor and why does it matter? What does the Public Service Commission actually do? What’s the difference between the roles of the Sheriff and the Attorney General?

This nonpartisan guide answers those questions. For every position on the ballot, we explain what the office does, who is running and where candidates stand on key issues – so Selma residents can make their own informed decision.

What’s Inside the Guide

The guide includes candidate backgrounds, education, professional experience, and where candidates stand on the issues — pulled from public statements, voting records, and official sources.

The guide also provides voting rights information, how to register, how absentee voting works, what to do in case of problems at the polling location, and how to get more involved in local government year-round.

Important Dates to Remember

For those who are not sure whether they’re registered or where their polling place is, the digital version of the guide has links to official resources and information.
