Your Guide to the 2026 November Ballot in Selma & Dallas County

The midterm elections are a week away, and the people you choose will make decisions that shape your daily life, from your utility bill to how your county is policed. This is the first general election since the US Supreme Court weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — the law won on the streets of Selma in 1965. For that reason, it’s even more important to make your voice heard at the ballot.
We’re releasing our Selma & Dallas County 2026 General Election Guide for everything you need to cast your ballot with confidence.
What’s on the Ballot This Election in Selma?
November 3 is the opportunity for Selma and Dallas County residents to select which candidates they want representing them at nearly every level of office – from the U.S. Senate to the Alabama Governor to the Dallas County Board of Education. For example:
- Voters will choose two justices for the Alabama Supreme Court, the final word on questions of Alabama law. The court interprets the state constitution and laws, including those that affect civil rights and voting access.
- The County Sheriff is on the ballot. This office covers all of Dallas County, including the unincorporated areas outside city limits that have no police department of their own. It runs the county jail, serves warrants and eviction notices and transports prisoners. The sheriff is elected by county voters and answers to them, not to the mayor or city council.
- Two seats on the Public Service Commission are also open. This office regulates private companies that sell utility services to the public. The biggest part of their job is setting and approving rates for electricity and gas. For most Selma households, their decisions show up directly on utility bills.
- Four constitutional amendments are also on the ballot. Statewide Amendment 4, for example, would require local school boards to have every public K-12 school broadcast or allow the performance of the first stanza of “The Star Spangled Banner” at least once a week.
Foot Soldiers Park has put together the nonpartisan Selma & Dallas County 2026 General Election Guide to help Selma residents navigate what’s on this year’s ballot full of races. We don’t endorse any candidates, but our guide lists all the candidates with their bios to inform voters’ personal decisions.
In addition to candidate profiles, the guide provides a checklist for what’s needed before voting – such as polling location, photo ID, registration status, and the official resources to answer those questions.
